Interrupted tapered pipe taps can combat these problems because they reduce flank friction, permit better lubrication and allow more room for chip removal.

The taper on NPT threads allows them to form a seal when torqued as the flanks of the threads compress against each other, as opposed to parallel/straight thread fittings or compression fittings in which the threads merely hold the pieces together and do not provide the seal.

Shops might use interrupted tapered pipe taps in high-hardness materials and where reduced cutting torque is required. “But, as a general rule, the taps are ideally suited for low-tensile materials because the tap provides more space for chips and, in particular, more space for lubricant,”
