Silver and Deming drill bits have straight shanks smaller than the diameter of the bit. Another name is the reduced-shank drill bit. Generally, this bit is 6 inches long and consists of a 1/2-inch shank with a 3-flats on shank.

The standard size for a Silver and Deming bit is a 3-inch bit with a 3–inch shank, for a total length of
6–inches. The shank is 1/2" –inch in diameter and the cutting portion is available in 1/64" –inch steps from 33/64&–inch to 1–1/2" inch.

Steel
Silver and Deming drill bit can be used for limited drilling in light gauge steel. This use requires slow speeds, high quality cutting oil, and a smaller diameter of pilot hole.

Soft Metals
Drilling through aluminium, magnesium and other soft metals do not require less torque as steel. For this reason, a Silver and Deming bit is a good choice for occasional drilling in these materials. The operator should use a cutting fluid like the Ultra S/P™ Super Premium appropriate for the metal.

Wood and Plastic
Wood and plastic are soft enough not require a large drill press for drilling holes up to 1"-inch in diameter. In these materials, a Silver and Deming drill bit works well for hole sizes larger than 1/2"-inch.
